How it works

Java and Bedrock both have /ride, but the words differ and Bedrock can do more. The generator writes the right form and tells you when something only works on one edition.

Java 1.19.4 and later

ride @p mount @e[type=pig,sort=nearest,limit=1]
ride @p dismount

Both sides must be a single entity and a player can't be the vehicle. Java has no "evict", so the generator runs dismount for every passenger.

Optional arguments are positional: to set the fill mode you also need the teleport rule, so the generator fills it in.

FAQ

How do I make a mob ride another mob?

Java 1.19.4+: ride <rider> mount <vehicle> with limit=1 on both selectors. Bedrock: ride <riders> start_riding <ride>.

Why does /ride fail on Java?

Usually because a selector matches more than one entity (add limit=1), the vehicle is a player, or the vehicle is already full.

Can I ride a player?

Not with /ride on Java — the vehicle can't be a player. Mount the player on the entity instead.

How do I summon a spider jockey?

On Bedrock: ride @e[type=spider] summon_rider skeleton. On Java, use the /summon generator and add a skeleton as a rider (Passengers).

What did /ride replace on Java?

Before 1.19.4 riding could only be set up when summoning, with a Passengers tag. /ride works on entities that already exist.
