Written Book Command Generator

Beta

Write the pages, style the text, add click actions like running a command or opening a link, and flip through the book in the preview. Copy one /give command that hands out the finished book.

How it works

Written books are popular on servers for rules, quests and menus where each line runs a command. Every page is a text component, so it can have colours, bold text, hover text and click actions.

Java 1.13 to 1.20.4

give @p minecraft:written_book{title:"Rules",author:"Server",pages:['{"text":"Be kind.\\nNo griefing."}','{"text":"[Spawn]","clickEvent":{"action":"run_command","value":"/spawn"}}']}

Java 1.20.5 to 1.21.4

give @p minecraft:written_book[written_book_content={title:"Rules",author:"Server",pages:['{"text":"Be kind."}']}]

Java 1.21.5 and later

Pages are written as SNBT, and click events use new field names:

give @p minecraft:written_book[written_book_content={title:"Rules",author:"Server",pages:[{text:"[Spawn]",click_event:{action:"run_command",command:"/spawn"}}]}]

The title is limited to 32 characters. Generation sets the tooltip line: original, copy of original, copy of a copy or tattered. A book and quill holds plain text pages that players can still edit.

Bedrock

Bedrock commands can’t fill in a book. The generator gives a book and quill (give @p writable_book 1) so you can write and sign it in game.

FAQ

How do I make clickable text in a Minecraft book?

Give a piece of text a click action: run a command, suggest a command, open a URL or copy text. In books, run_command runs as the player reading it, so they need permission for that command.

How do I start a new line in a book page?

Type \n in the text where the line should break. The generator writes it the way your version expects.

Why does my book say “Invalid book tag”?

The command was written for another version. Pages are JSON strings until 1.21.4 and SNBT from 1.21.5, and 1.20.5 moved book data into written_book_content. Pick your version and copy again.

How much text fits on a page?

About 14 lines of 19 characters, less with bold text. Longer text is cut off on screen, so split it over several pages (up to 100).

Can I give a written book on Bedrock?

Not with text in it. Bedrock /give has no NBT, so write the pages in a book and quill and sign it.
