How it works

A banner is a base colour plus a list of layers, each a pattern in a dye colour, drawn bottom first. The base colour is part of the item ID (red_banner); on a shield it is stored separately.

Java 1.13 to 1.20.4: pattern codes

give @p minecraft:white_banner{BlockEntityTag:{Patterns:[{Pattern:"ls",Color:11},{Pattern:"rs",Color:14}]}}

Patterns use short codes (bs bottom stripe, cr saltire, cre creeper) and colours are numbers from 0 (white) to 15 (black). Shields add Base: with the base colour number. The globe needs 1.14 and the snout 1.16.

Java 1.20.5 and later

give @p minecraft:white_banner[banner_patterns=[{pattern:"minecraft:stripe_left",color:"blue"},{pattern:"minecraft:stripe_right",color:"red"}]]
give @p minecraft:shield[base_color="yellow",banner_patterns=[{pattern:"minecraft:cross",color:"black"}]]

Flow and guster patterns came with 1.21. The pattern list in the generator follows your version.

Bedrock

Bedrock can only pick the base colour, with a data value after the count: give @p banner 1 1 is a red banner (0 is black, 15 white). Patterns have to be added on a loom.

FAQ

How many patterns can a banner have?

A loom stops at 6 layers. Commands can add more, but the game may not draw every extra layer, so keep important parts within the first 6.

How do I put a banner design on a shield?

Choose Shield in the generator: the same layers go on the shield and the base colour is stored with it. In survival, combine a shield and a banner on a crafting table.

What are the banner pattern codes?

Before Java 1.20.5 patterns were short codes: bs bottom stripe, ts top stripe, ls/rs left/right stripe, cs centre, ms middle, cr saltire, sc cross, mr lozenge, mc roundel, bo border, cbo curly border, bri bricks, gra/gru gradients, cre creeper, sku skull, flo flower, moj thing, glb globe, pig snout. The generator picks the right form for your version.

Why does my banner command not work in 1.21?

1.20.5 replaced BlockEntityTag with the banner_patterns component, using pattern IDs and colour names instead of codes and numbers. Pick your version and copy the command again.

Can I give patterned banners on Bedrock?

No, only the base colour. Bedrock /give has no NBT, so use a loom for the patterns.
