How it works

A potion has a base potion (what you would brew, like strong_swiftness) and, on Java, any number of custom effects. Durations are written in ticks (20 per second), levels as an amplifier that starts at 0 for level I. The generator handles both.

Java 1.13 to 1.20.1

give @p minecraft:splash_potion{Potion:"minecraft:strong_swiftness",CustomPotionEffects:[{Id:8b,Amplifier:1b,Duration:1800}]}

Effects use numeric IDs here (8 is jump boost), so effects added later, like wind charged, can’t be written for these versions.

Java 1.20.2 to 1.20.4

give @p minecraft:splash_potion{Potion:"minecraft:strong_swiftness",custom_potion_effects:[{id:"minecraft:jump_boost",amplifier:1b,duration:1800}]}

Java 1.20.5 and later

give @p minecraft:splash_potion[potion_contents={potion:"minecraft:strong_swiftness",custom_color:16711935,custom_effects:[{id:"minecraft:jump_boost",amplifier:1b,duration:1800}]}]

Lingering potions apply a quarter of each duration and tipped arrows an eighth; the preview tooltip shows the real time.

Bedrock: data values

Bedrock has no potion NBT. The number after the count picks the potion: give @p potion 1 16 is Swiftness II, give @p splash_potion 1 21 is Healing. Tipped arrows are arrow with the potion’s number plus one, so give @p arrow 16 25 gives Harming II arrows. Custom effects, colours and names are Java only.

FAQ

How do I give a potion with a level above II?

Add a custom effect and set its level, for example Speed 10. On Java levels go up to 256. Bedrock potions are fixed to what can be brewed.

How do I make a potion last forever?

Set a very long duration. 1,000,000 seconds is about 11 days of play. If you just want the effect on a player, /effect can give it with an infinite duration on recent versions.

What are the Bedrock potion ID numbers?

0 water, 4 awkward, 5 night vision, 7 invisibility, 9 leaping, 12 fire resistance, 14 swiftness, 17 slowness, 19 water breathing, 21 healing, 23 harming, 25 poison, 28 regeneration, 31 strength, 34 weakness, 36 decay, 37 turtle master, 40 slow falling; long and strong versions follow each one. Pick the base potion in the generator to see its number.

Can I hide the potion particles?

Yes, on Java: tick Hide particles on an effect. The effect icon follows the particle setting unless you set it on its own, so the generator writes both when they differ.

Why is my potion colour different from the effect?

The game mixes the colours of every effect in the bottle. Set a custom liquid colour to override it (Java only).
