How it works

A title takes up to three commands, and the order matters:

  1. title @a times 10 70 20 — fade in, stay and fade out in ticks (20 ticks = 1 second). Only needed when you change the defaults, which are 10, 70 and 20.
  2. title @a subtitle … — sets the subtitle but shows nothing on its own.
  3. title @a title … — shows the title, together with the subtitle set before it.

The action bar (title @a actionbar …) is the small line above the hotbar and shows by itself. Java added it in 1.11. On Java the text is a text component (JSON, or SNBT from 1.21.5); on Bedrock it is plain text with § colour codes.

To run several lines at once, put them in a function file or a chain of command blocks. For a chat message instead, use the /tellraw generator.

FAQ

Why doesn't my subtitle show?

A subtitle only appears together with a title: run the subtitle command first, then the title command. The generator puts them in that order.

How long does a Minecraft title stay on screen?

By default 10 ticks fading in, 70 ticks on screen and 20 fading out — 5 seconds in total. Change it with title <targets> times <fadeIn> <stay> <fadeOut>.

How do I show text above the hotbar?

Use the action bar: title @a actionbar followed by your text. It works on Java 1.11 and later and on Bedrock.

How do I clear a title?

title @a clear removes the title on screen; title @a reset also puts the timing back to the defaults.
