How it works
/place runs the game's own world generator at a position: a feature (a tree, a geode, an ore blob), a full structure (a village with its villagers), a saved template, or a jigsaw pool. It is Java only — Bedrock loads saved builds with /structure load.
Java 1.19 and later
place feature fancy_oak place structure village_plains 100 64 -20 place template igloo/top ~ ~ ~ clockwise_90 place jigsaw village/plains/town_centers bottom 7
Template arguments are positional: to set a mirror you also write the position and rotation, so the generator fills in the defaults for you.
Java 1.18.2
placefeature fancy_oak ~ ~ ~
Only features, and only in 1.18.2 — 1.18 and 1.18.1 have no command for it.
FAQ
How do I spawn a village with a command?
On Java 1.19+ use place structure village_plains (or village_desert, village_snowy…). It generates the whole village with villagers, like natural world generation.
What's the difference between a structure and a template?
A structure is generated like in a new world and changes every time. A template is one saved piece (a .nbt file from a structure block or data pack) placed exactly as saved.
Why does /place fail with 'Failed to place'?
Features check their surroundings: a tree needs dirt or grass under it, some structures need the right biome or terrain. Try another spot.
Does /place work on Bedrock?
No. Bedrock uses /structure load for saved builds; there is no command that runs world generation features.
What does integrity do?
For templates, integrity below 1 leaves out a random share of blocks (0.5 places about half) — handy for ruins. Add a seed to get the same pattern every time.
