How it works
A /tellraw message is a list of text components: each run of text carries its own colour, styles and actions. The generator starts the list with an empty string (["", …]) so the first part’s colour doesn’t spill into the rest.
Java versions
- Hex colours like
#FF8800need 1.16 or later; older versions only have the 16 named colours, so the generator leaves a hex colour out and tells you. - Before 1.16 hover text used
value; 1.16 to 1.21.4 usecontents. - 1.21.5 switched to SNBT and renamed the actions:
clickEventbecameclick_eventwithurlorcommand, andhoverEventbecamehover_event.
Bedrock
Bedrock uses {"rawtext":[{"text":"…"}]} with § codes for colour, bold (§l), italics (§o) and scrambled text (§k). Underline, strikethrough, hex colours, hover text and click actions don’t exist on Bedrock, so the generator leaves them out and says so.
For big on-screen text instead of chat, use the /title generator.
FAQ
How do I make a clickable link in Minecraft chat?
Add a part, set On click to Open URL and paste the link. Java asks the player to confirm before opening it. Bedrock has no click actions.
Why does my tellraw command not work in 1.21.5?
1.21.5 changed text components to SNBT and renamed clickEvent/hoverEvent to click_event/hover_event, with url or command instead of value. Pick 1.21.5 or later in the generator to get the new format.
What's the difference between /tellraw and /say?
/say prints plain text with your name in front. /tellraw prints exactly what you write, with colours and actions, and you choose who sees it with the target selector.
Can I use colour codes like §c on Java?
Not in /tellraw: Java uses the color field instead. The § codes are what Bedrock uses, and the generator writes them for you when you pick Bedrock.
